Both Bharatanatyam and yoga trace their roots to ancient Hindu mythology, and both practices are deeply steeped in spiritual tradition. As yoga has evolved into the modern world—especially the Western world—there is a tension between the classical tradition and the modern interpretations. This tension exists in the evolution of Bharatanatyam as well, and Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy approach Bharatanatyam as both a classical form and as a living, breathing language with which to speak about the contemporary human experience.
